A Little Bit About Me
Born and raised in Brisbane, Australia I’m a lover of the state of Queensland. From the beautiful beaches to the gorgeous sunny days, this State is my home. My parents are originally from the UK and I spent a small part of my childhood living just outside of London. But the pull of sunny Queensland was too strong and my family eventually relocated back to the “Sunshine State”.
I’ve always had a strong sense of equality and justice but it took until I was 16 and sitting in my legal studies class to realise that I could fulfill this passion through the practice of law. I went on to study a Bachelor of Laws at the Queensland University of Technology and was admitted to practice in 2013.
While I knew I wanted to be a lawyer from a young age, finding an area of law I wanted to practice in wasn’t as simple. I worked in criminal law, administrative review and personal injuries but struggled to find my “spark for justice” fulfilled in these areas of practice. I was often searching for new opportunities in an attempt to translate my passion into a job. This was how I came across a job advert for a position at the Office of the Information Commissioner. It was here that my love affair with Right to Information (RTI) and Information Privacy (Privacy) law began.
I spent a number of years as a Review Officer with the Information Commissioner’s Office and then worked in RTI at an agency level, leading a team processing departmental and Ministerial RTI applications. From this practice, I gained an understanding of the unique difficulties that come with processing RTI applications at a departmental level including, compliance with statutory timeframes and internal briefing requirements. I also saw the complexities involved in making RTI applications and asserting appeal rights for individuals and businesses.
As a result, I set up RTI Consultants to guide the government, businesses, and individuals through our RTI and Privacy system. I now spend my days contributing to and ensuring our State’s democratic governance through my firm. I know that each matter I work on is a step in the right direction to a stronger Queensland. I am well respected within the RTI and Privacy sector in Queensland and am known for my expert decision making and clear legal advice. My dream is to expand my business across Australia to ensure our country has the most accountable and transparent government and informed citizens in the world.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my wonderful partner John, friends and family. I relax by watching bad reality tv shows, reading crime novels and eating a lot of chocolate. I try to balance out the chocolate consumption with Pilates – though I can’t say I’m very good!
I feel very lucky to have found an area of law I love so much that fulfills my passion. If you think my passion and vision aligns with your business or legal matter, please give me a call or shoot me an email. I’m always happy to chat.
